Cats

Vidia has been with us for a couple of years now (the fluffy one). Some crazy lady walked into my wife’s job last last years and asked if anyone wanted a kitten. Candi asked where the cat was and almost on queue the little bugger popped his head out from the lady’s purse… The rest, as they say, is history…

These shots are on those rare moments when these two kids aren’t chasing each other around the house driving us mad!!

Well the kittens have been almost 1 week away from “Kujo Mama” and seem to be warming up to humans (which is a relief to us all). They spend a majority of the day in their cage but come out at least twice daily to romp around the living room, harass our other two cats, and play with us and whoever seems to be around. Some are more affectionate that others but that is to be expected. We still haven’t decided which ones (or how many) we’ll keep.

The two black polydactyl kittens are even more interesting now that we’ve also found out that their back paws also have an unusual amount of toes. One has 4 and the other has 5!! Just amazing.

One more week and we’ll be getting the mother fixed and released shortly afterward (once she’s healed). Then we’ll be getting our lives back to some sort of normalcy (such as it is)…

Well the process of taking the 4 kittens from “Kujo Mama” went off yesterday without a hitch. She’s been crying off and on through the night but that’s to be expected. Now that we were able to get a good look at the two black kittens, we finally able to confirm that they do indeed have 6 front toes!! Here’s some more pics for your own amazement…

Well, now that the kittens are starting to stumble around the room, we thought it was time to shoot some video. Thanks to Candi for finding the right time last night to do the shooting!

Well after a few days in a clean room, being well-fed, using a litter box, and not being harassed by the outside world, the “Kujo Mother” doesn’t seem to stink nearly as much! I’m relieved to find out that I don’t need any shots for the many bites and scratches I received -just a regiment of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds. I guess that the lymph nodes are located just inside my armpits so the doctor told me just to keep that in mind in case they start to hurt. The 4 kittens seem to be getting along well. They are just starting to open their eyes and mother is still a good, attentive caregiver. Candi and I are still trying to decide if we want to keep one of them as a memento to the savage attack I received from their mother! I hope some of them have kewl markings…

Thanks to my mom’s ample supply of cat-ready antibiotic medicine, we’re getting the mother cat as healthy as she can be while she’s here with us. I only hope she calms down a little after getting more food in her belly!

So we manage to find a stray cat in one of the rooms we’re remodeling in our home. She’s got a litter of 5 kittens….

Looks cute… But my wife and I slowly realized that they couldn’t stay there –and we weren’t about to let them lose on the neighborhood since there are already a good population of strays out there, we didn’t feel good about adding another 5 to the mix. I figured we have another spare room in less of a state of disrepair (but still a work in progress) that we could keep them in with safety until the kittens are grown enough to find homes for them…

“Do you think I should get some gloves?” I asked my wife…

…Somehow I don’t see her getting house broken!

Well we finally got another cat in the family. This one looks like a fighter too! Even after Candi and I decided on NOT getting any more cats, this one just seems to jump up on us and we couldn’t say no…

My good old friend is happy as can possibly be. He is the only cat in the house these days and I’m pretty sure he likes it that way. When he’s totally at peace and comfortable with his surroundings, he’ll lay on his back like this. He’s actually been with me longer than my wife! He’s been everything from the only cat in the house to one of 10 at times! Weasel (his name) has some pretty strange habits though. He like the smell of my breath right after I wake up in the morning. He’ll run up to my face and sniff my mouth as close as possible. He doesn’t like it after I’ve brushed my teeth though (nasty huh?). He also MUST have someone walk him to his food bowl in the kitchen. He won’t just stroll over there himself. He’ll even stop eating to look back and make sure you’re still there. If not, he’ll go and find you to complain. Weasel won’t drink out of a water bowl or anything -he has to have his water straight from the faucet. If anyone is going to the bathroom, he’ll run in with you and whine until you turn on the faucet so he can drink from the trickle that comes out. He likes to catch birds our mice and bring them into the house to show me. After he knows I’ve seen it, he’ll take it into the bathroom to eat it completely -bones and all! What a strange fellow! But he’s my boy.

Saturday was an especially hard day for me. I spent the entire day at home -and mostly alone at home. Being home, there’s a lot here to remind me of my cats that are now gone. Places where they used to sleep, spots on the couch where I would sit to watch TV and they’d be next to me or up by my head and purr. Working in the office where Snowy would always have to be sitting on top of my monitor enjoying the warmth and my company… I cried all day…

I suppose I’d been holding it in most of this past week just to get by, I guess much of what’s happened didn’t hit me until then, maybe I didn’t want to let it out until I was alone. It’s even possible that I just didn’t want to feel this sadness -so I avoided it. But this past Saturday, there was no escaping it. Nowhere to hide -and no need.

I think it was a necessary time of emotional “purging” for me. I don’t think my mourning is over but I do think it may be downhill from here. I’m starting to realize all the new freedoms we can now experience like no longer needing a litter box since Weasel usually preferred to use the outside for his “business”. I don’t have to close the door to my office any longer in fear that the little ones would come in and spray and poop all over the place (as they had in the past). We won’t need to vacuum the house as often as there is a lot less cat hair being shed…

But I’d gladly put up with the hassles again just to have them back around me. Strangely, I no longer want an uncomplicated, hassle-free life; I want my kids back…

Well the hits keep on coming. I am convinced that I’m just numb right now. Then again, anytime someone asks me about how I’m doing I just break down. But in the mean time, I feel just numb. I’ve had to take 3 of my 4 cats to the vet since Saturday to be put to sleep. Finally Snowy started showing signs of the FeLV disease and then it advanced quickly to the point where I had to take her in yesterday afternoon to end her suffering.

Losing my two youngest cats… It’s something I’m finding I’m a bit ambivalent about. They did add a LOT of hassle to my life, besides spraying in just about every room of the house at one time or another. They kept me awake when I needed to sleep, forced me to keep the door closed to my office/dungeon while I worked, had to look for them to bring them inside for the night, clean up their hair all over the carpet…

But I did love them terribly. No matter where I was in the house, one of them would be there with me -just to be with me. So now just being at home reminds me of those two brothers. I open doors and expect to see them on the other side ready to run inside for some food and water for the next adventure.

Yesterday was a little better than Sunday and I’d like to say I’m doing better today than that. I feel bad just laughing or joking right now. I feel like it’s wrong to be happy in the midst of this. I get the occasional wave of sadness come over me -usually when someone asks me how I’m doing or what happened. So naturally I don’t want to see anyone right now -and I know that’s just not healthy but I just don’t like the idea of willingly making myself cry; I can do that very well on my own thank you.

I’m sure time will heal -and it already seems to have done SOME healing. I know I will again be my normal happy, crazy, perverted self but right now that seems so far away from me.

Bear and Dipstick were brothers. They were nearly inseparable their entire life. They ran together outside, played together, fought each other, slept with each other, and eventually were infected with the same fatal disease. But while on this earth, they sure had fun! Here’s some pictures of them as they were…

Well today was even harder than yesterday. We had been hoping that Bear would pull through this illness but his condition started deteriorating rapidly and we decided we had to take him in this afternoon. He was also put down for the same condition. Needless to say, we are a very sad family right now and we miss them both terribly. What follows is a photo collection of Bear and his brief tour of this world…
