According to this BBC article, Monday, January 24th, is expected to be the most miserable day of the year. It seems that some professor at Cardiff University has managed to calculate down to the exact day the most miserable day of the entire year. Factors like the cold weather, realizations about holiday spending debt, and already failed New Year’s resolutions are a big contributor but the real bonus this year is the fact that the day falls on a Monday! I overheard the story on the radio while driving home this past Monday and had to laugh because although I have no debt from the holidays, the weather is just awesome, and my New Year’s resolutions are still going strong, I DID feel miserable!!!
Life In General
I’ve been tired all Monday and was begging to just get some sleep. Got home late and was already looking at a short night before having to get up super early to get to work on time Tuesday. I went to sleep at 11pm and managed to wake up at 1am thinking it was actually time to get up and start getting ready. When I looked at the clock and realized that I still had 3 hours left, I thought I should try and go back to bed but I just couldn’t! Just 2 hours of sleep and I feel better than I have all yesterday -and history shows that when I wake up feeling refreshed, I better get my butt out of bed now or I’ll regret it later.
Besides, it’s been over a week since I’ve have a few hours to pour into answering some emails, updating my LiveJournal, and just sit and think. Sounds like a plan to me. Let’s only hope that I make it through the rest of the day now!
Ever wake up more tired than when you laid down to sleep? I sure have lately. I can at least remember one instance this past week when this happened to me and remembered that I was dreaming a lot that night. It’s almost like I was so “involved” in my dream that, although I was asleep, took away what would have been a restful time for me. Well, at least that’s my theory on what is happening.
Well I called my hosting service and asked for “.htaccess” services and they offered to “migrate” me to another hosting plan that would offer what I needed. It sounded good but what they didn’t tell me was that I would be offline for a few days while they transfer my files to new tower servers. Boy was that a panic this morning when I got up and realized that all my website data was seemingly gone!!! A frantic call to their support line calmed me down but I still don’t have my data back yet. This means that all my pics (found on this page) are not available. Along with my photo album of my Dad’s memorial service and out Hawaii trip that most of my family is looking for. Oh well. At least there’s hope that my data is still in transit and not lost.
Lesson learned: keep a backup of anything online!
It’s been raining like crazy the past week. I’ve heard that we’ve already received more rain than we usually get all year! This morning it all turned to snow and ice in the Antelope Valley. Here’s a shot of my drive on San Francisquito Canyon road:
Pretty scary drive considering the road conditions!
I think this was meant to be a late Christmas gift (and they won’t be doing a Christmas bonus this year). Since I had to sell my Canon A70 this past year when I fell on hard times, I guess they knew that I wanted one and didn’t have one yet. I have to say I was very taken aback by their thoughtfulness. Ironic thing was that I had been thinking about a digital camera that very morning. It is so nice to be able to just post a pic of something random or interesting that you run past in the day without even thinking about it. I’m sooooo jazzed!
Thank you, thank you Land Tech Engineering!!
I recently got the complete Queen discography but hadn’t listened to much of it yet. Well this weekend, I broke out the tracts and started listening to some of those great albums I grew up with over the years.
Queen – The Miricle (1989)
I first got this tape just before going to college in Daytona Beach, FL. I used to rollerblade listening to this album on my walkman in the middle of the night. I had the original rollerblades and would find these beautiful stretches of asphalt to speed skate on in the dark. I sure did look scary then I’m sure -I’ll have to dig up some pictures of how I looked back then, scan and post them here. Man, I haven’t listened to this album in years! Boy does that bring back memories of college…Some good, some bad. Still, it’s just amazing just how much music will re-kindle old memories in me…
Oh my god was it awful driving in to work today. Nearly 3 hours. I think I averaged 5 mph through the whole Santa Clarita Valley…ug. Now I REALLY want to get my business going! Anyways, the rain is preventing me from going for my daily speed walk down here for lunch which is good considering the fact that I’m waaaaay overdue for a few journal updates!
I still haven’t lost any weight since I started my “program” 3 weeks ago but the good thing is that I also haven’t GAINED any weight over the Christmas and New Years holiday season. I’ve also managed to get to the point where I don’t feel pain when I speed walk for 50-60 min -and my hands don’t swell up anymore either when I exercise. Not bad for 3 weeks of work. I’m still researching the “perfect eating plan” and I think I’m getting a lot closer. Turns out it’s a lot cheaper to eat this way than before (oh how I love Sam’s Club).
I’ve got a lot of individual journal entries to post today so wish me luck getting a few extra moments to type them all out (and that my fingers manage to stay with me)…
A week and a half since my last entry. That’s shameful (or maybe I’ve just been busy). Man, so much has happened this past week I’m probably going to have to break this up in to several entries as the memories start coming back today! I still haven’t lost any significant weight but I’m not worried. It’s still the holidays and I’ve been going to parties, family gatherings and the like. People have been feeding me like crazy. Still, I haven’t GAINED any weight either which is pretty good. I’m actually looking forward to my daily walks during my lunch hour. It feels so good now to be getting back in shape.
Business is picking up still -and I haven’t even worked that hard at it this week. Even though I decided NOT to continue marketing myself as a PC technician, I got three calls yesterday (my day off for working my business) for some pretty big PC repairs. I came home from the three house calls with a check for $125 and about $150(min) coming later when I return their systems later this week. Not bad for a few hours work in the afternoon! One of the families mentioned something pretty interesting to me as they were writing me a check for $125, “I sure don’t mind paying for good help!” Yet another message telling me that I’m actually worth it! Good to hear.
Well anyways, more to come later today…
I’m still up above 215. As of this morning, I weighed in at 217. But I know that it’s still not a bad situation. I DID go to at least 2 parties this weekend (where…uh…food…it was served). I also haven’t changed my diet yet. On a good note, this past Friday while walking, I realized that my body had gone through a change. With only one week of daily walking (with the exception of Wednesday), I no longer felt pain and a swelling of my hands while out there briskly walking. In fact, it felt good! It felt like it used to when I was in shape and got my heart rate, breathing, and sweating up. Not too bad for a 34-year-old with only one week of regular exercise under my belt! Then again, watching the show “The Biggest Loser” did inspire a little this past week.
This week I start my 5 daily meal diet. I want to thank Widgetchick for her suggestions last week. We hit up the grocery store armed with a new list of items. I’m drinking straight water this week (I normally like drinking half water and half soda at room temperature). I was pretty amazed at just how cheap those budget gourmet meals are! We got 10 for $10 at our local (overpriced) Albertson’s in Rosamond. Amazing; lunch for one dollar! I think this is going to help me lose weight and save money at the same time.
So even though I’ve not seen a massive plummet in my weight as of yet, I’m still pretty excited about the changes I’m going though. I’m also grateful for my wife who is sooo supportive of my decisions lately. Not only with my desire to start my own business, but with this weight loss plan. Even with our tight finances this month, she’s willing to do whatever we can to make this plan work -and for that I am very grateful.
Sometimes, when I sit back and think about the business I’m planning on starting, I get scared. I am afraid the skills I’m offering people aren’t developed enough to be worthwhile to anyone. I’m afraid I don’t have what it takes to make it. I fear I don’t have the discipline to stay to the task at hand -even when the stakes are high. Am I really wired to own my own business? I guess we’ll find out…
The truth of the matter is that I HAVE to be wired to own my own business! I may not be disciplined enough now but I’m going to learn how. I may not think I have the skills needed but people are still coming to me and asking for my help -and I’m not even marketing myself. I guess the fears are not that well founded -but they are still there none-the-less. I guess I’m just going to have to face them head on. I’ve already started the process going and will be taking my Wednesdays off to work the business starting next week. I better make it count because I’m making a fairly large sacrifice of my daily time to get my Wednesdays off…
Oh well. Just thought I’d vomit out what’s been in the back of my mind lately.
I’ve managed to go for a brisk walk every day that I’ve been at work this week -and I will say that I’m starting to get back that feeling I used to have when I was in shape. I actually enjoy that feeling; an accelerated heart rate, sweating, panting…working my body out. I’m getting it back. Watching the latest episode of “The Greatest Loser” show was a little inspirational too. I haven’t started dropping the weight off but I’m not worried. It’s just a matter of time now. I am also expecting to start the 5 daily meal plan this coming Monday.
It was suggested to me to start reading Entrepreneur magazine so I’ve been reading it instead of my usual Maximum PC when I go the sit on the toilet. I’ve learned a lot recently. I also have a ton of additional ideas that I can now explore regarding other possible business directions I can go it. Their recent article that has got me thinking the most is their “Hot Trends”. They are listing some of the most recent trends in the US economy and how to possible do business in response to it. One of the things that was mentioned was “Life Caching”. That’s due to the fact that people are taking photos now more than ever since digital cameras are very affordable and there is no money spent on film. The problem is that most consumers aren’t well adept at managing the data once they’ve collected it. A possible service I can provide is management of photo websites, archiving, or even training.
I finally found my perfect pen! I remember finding these little gems at a Hallmark store years ago. I liked them at the time simply because they were thin and fit in my planner quite well. Over time, I stopped using them (AND my planner) and finally settled on the Pilot Precise v7 Rolling Ball pen:
It has a 0.7mm tip which I have found to be the perfect size for my writing. 1.0mm was way too wide and 0.5mm felt like it was scratching the paper. Well now that I’m starting to use my planner again, I’ve found that my old, trusty Pilot is just too large and bleeds through the paper too easily. I searched through all the office supply stores in town with no luck finding anything similar to the Le Pen. So with hope in my heart, I strolled on into the Hallmark store and there they were! All these years later and they’re still being sold there! Now that I’ve used them all over my office, I see just how much I prefer them over the Pilot. What’s amazing is the fact that the Le Pen has a tip of only 0.3mm yet it flows much easier and bolder. Now that I know, I’m never going back!
Isn’t this sort of information sickening to read? Who cares about what pen I use besides me? I don’t know but if you’re still reading this I thank you for paying me this much attention!!!
I took a day off of work yesterday to go to the dentist. Wound up staying home and talking on the phone all afternoon trying to get my medical and dental benefits corrected. Didn’t even get to go to the dentist after all. Looks like I’ll be unable to see the dentist until this coming Wednesday. In the mean time, Orajel is my friend!
I’ve had a toothache since last night and it managed to keep me up almost all night long. I had to get up and put oragel on the the tooth just about every 1-2 hours. I didn’t actually get any decent sleep until the morning. I’m going to have to see the dentist today (if one will take me at such short notice). I don’t even know what my dental plan covers. Wish me luck everyone, this could get ugly…
Up to 217 now. And I walked for my entire lunch hour yesterday. I had an accelerated heart rate and the sweat and everything! Oh well. Maybe I’m just building muscle at the moment. Well at least I KNOW what’s going on with my body instead of not caring. I DO care now -and I’m going to do something about it. I will be 150 lbs. by the end of the year…
Oh yes, I will be 150 in 2005
My bosses DID agree to let me work only 4-10’s on a trial basis but it won’t start until this Friday since that is when the pay period begins. In addition, holiday days will only count for 8 hours to be fair to the other employees. I found out yesterday that I CAN hack a 15 hour day but I’ll need to be careful to get to bed at a decent time the day before. Traffic in the morning around that early hour is just horrible. I’d say it added an easy 30 minuets to the drive. Just aweful. But at least this way I’ll be driving in to town one less day each week. I’m pretty excited about the prospect of pulling this off since Candi is fully supportive of this. It feels great to know that she’s behind me.
I was asked to perform a song this past weekend for a graduation ceremony for people completing a very difficult program for treatment of chemical addictions. I tried to put together a “band” performance but wasn’t able to get the people and the rehearsals in enough time to make it happen so I decided to do a solo performance of an old U2 song titled “Running to Stand Still”. Funny thing was that I’d never paid ANY attention to the lyrics before. I simply liked the song, worked well solo with just a piano (something I can play) and that was that. Well I decided to research the lyrics and the meaning behind them and was simply blown away. Turns out this song was inspired by the horrible stories Bono heard about coming from his home country of Ireland where heroin was ravaging the poor. People were willing to risk life in prison (the penalty for heroin smuggling in Ireland) just to make some quick cash and get the chance to shoot up again. This insanity was remarkable to Bono (not a heavy drug user -if at all) and also to me. I still didn’t want to do the song at the graduation ceremony simply because I considered it a “downer” compared to the more celebratory tunes normally sung there but it was all I had. Turns out, it was an absolute smash! So many people came up to me afterward and said just how much that song meant to them and how each of them pulled something different from the words of the song. I was beside myself. I never would have expected that sort of reaction. Goes to show: God’s still in control!
With that inspiration to continue checking up on the meaning and stories behind U2 lyrics, I was also amazed at another song that I have always liked: “One Tree Hill”. As it turns out, this song was inspired by the death of a great friend to the band that lived in a town in Australia called One Tree Hill. The song makes strong allusions to the the rapture with phrases like “I’ll see you again, when the stars fall from the sky, and the moon turn to red, over One Tree Hill.” (Rev. 6:12-13) -just chilling! …Slowly I’m realizing just how much the Bible plays a part in U2’s lyrics.
Well it was looing good for a couple of days there and then today I’m actually over 215 lbs (by 0.5). I didn’t eat dinner last night, and walked for 40 min. straight through my lunch hour. I drank a lot of fluids and had two apples and a banana for lunch. Here’s where I probably went bad: Breakfast was McD’s 2 sausage and egg McMuffins. I had two doughnuts when I got to work (the Friday tradition) and some choc. chip cookies at the movies at around 9pm. Still, I was hoping that the physical exercise would help yesterday but I also know that I took in a LOT of calories from bad sources. I will note though that my diet isn’t normally as bad as it can get on a Friday. Still I think I’m going to start drinking just water during the week (if I can stand it) and working on my 5 daily meal plan.
Yet, I’m not worried. I know there will be fluctuations and that my two-day “downward spiral” couldn’t last!
The weather in Van Nuys was just wonderful today. I’d only make it perfect with some serious cloud cover -but that’s just me. After the cold spell we’ve had here in Southern Cali, getting back to the 80’s during the day in mid-December is nice. I went for a walk for lunch (part of my weight loss plan) and got to use my old “behind the neck” headphones again (now that I’ve fixed them for the 2nd time). I have to say, the sound from these little fellas is pretty good and having a volume adjustment on the cable is a must these days (why this isn’t found on EVERY headset I’ll never know). Here’s a pic of the ones I use:
Paid $12 at Radio Shack for them and I haven’t looked back. I was considering Shure E2C Sound Isolating Earphones for $60 but why try to fix something that isn’t broken. I think if I was using the train more often, I’d consider it as it would be easier to sleep with the ear buds than what I use. But currently I only need them for my lunch walks.
I’ve also found that my hands swell up while walking. I think it’s because of an accelerated heart rate with hands down below my waist swinging. It feels strange but I’m hoping that it will eventually go away as I improve my circulation. I’m still a bit excited about my weight loss plan. Candi doesn’t think it’s wise to weigh myself everyday as many people get discouraged by it but I’m looking at it with the understanding that there will be fluctuations over time but the overall trend should go down. I also want to know what sort of days help me lose weight and what activities don’t. I think with a more immediate feedback (the following morning) I can better make changes in my lifestyle. We’ll see…
Well it’s looking like I’m going to be approved for working 4-10’s as my work schedule. That means that I’ll be working from 7am – 6pm. This means that I’ll be leaving for work at 5am and getting home at 8pm. That’s a 15 hour day!!!! Well the idea is that I’ll be able to take Wednesday off and then I’m only doing this for 2 days in a row -with a day to recover afterwords. This way I’ll be able to market myself to other businesses and do more side work than just my Saturdays for a few hours. I’m going to give this schedule a try next week and see if I can hack it…
===============
I’m pretty proud of this photo:
I managed to take it off the 14 freeway just North of the Ave-I on-ramp. I’ve wanted to snap a shot of that falcon for a year now and finally had a spare moment (and the camera) to make it happen! I’m pretty happy with the result.
It’s always a little hard to visit these emotions for me. I normally will not even think about it today. I’ll try and not listen to the news or the TV talk about the anniversary of America’s first major attack on her own soil from a foreign force. Even if I wasn’t there, my dad was. I’m working on a web page that better describes his life and experiences now that he’s passed on. He died this past year on October 19th, 2003, and didn’t get to see the 62nd anniversary last year. This year, I’m starting to look more into the story behind that day in history and the human experience. And where we are today.
My father was stationed on the USS Tangier that morning. As you can see from the images below, he was right next to the USS Utah which was sunk that morning…
Here you can see the USS Tangier in the lower left as indicated. This image was taken from a Japanese torpedo bomber aircraft. A direct torpedo hit can be seen impacting another battleship in the center of the image. The USS Utah has already started to tip in this image.
Another Japanese aerial photo taken here shows the USS Utah already capsized in front of the Tangier.
When attempts were made to try and salvage the USS Utah, it became apparent that it would not be possible to rescue the ship and it was decided to leave her in place and turn it into a grave site for the fallen sailors of the ship that were never recovered. Today, there is still an oil slick coming from the ship (as is the case with the USS Arizona memorial) and plant life has started growing on the rusting frame.
A recent sonar photograph taken by a local Hawaiian diver rendered this image of the USS Utah from underwater.
Having visited both the USS Utah and Arizona memorial sites, I can tell you that it is a very emotional experience. I believe the tour guide for the Arizona memorial still got choked up while giving his talk. My own father didn’t talk much about that day unless he was drunk until the 50th anniversary in 1991. I can understand his desire there. There was nothing glorious about it. It was a horrible moment in America that is still painful to look at -even for me and I wasn’t born for another 30 years. I think that it holds deeper meaning to me now in the aftermath of 9-11.
But as much as I’d like to compare the two events, they couldn’t be more opposite. WWII was a geographical conflict of sorts. Conquest was the motivation and not morals or religon. 9-11 and the current state of terrorism that plagues our planet today has no physical border. We will never see a victory nor a surrender in this battle if we do “win”. Unlike Japan surrendering to the US onboard of the USS Missouri 4 years later, we will never experience such things anymore in this current war. But we MUST win. I have more to say about this but have lost most of my time collecting some decent info about Pearl Harbor…
In summary, I’d like to just remind those of you reading this to remember Pearl Harbor and December 7th , 1941. Remember the thousands of sailors who died that day and the millions that would die in the ensuing war around the world. Remember but don’t get too thankful abot your so-called peacful existance today. I would suggest that we live in a far more dangerous time. Terrorism has no boundary and no moral decency. …And this was won’t be over in the next 4 years either!
Well I pulled out the bathroom scale and wiped the dust off (and misc. other things) and managed to step on to it this past weekend for the first time in about a year. I am now a full 215 lbs. at 5′-5″ tall. That’s a 15 lb. gain from last year. I’m so depressed about that. I actually hadn’t thought that I gained much this past year but I was surely wrong. 15 lbs. is more than my new laptop weighs! It’s like I’m carrying it around all day long. That’s crazy. So I definitely need to lose about 70 lbs. this year. I’m going to start by drinking a lot more water and eating more frequently and in less portions. I need to research a little about exactly WHAT those small meals should be but once their in place I should be fine. I’m also planning on exercising at my lunches and in the evenings when I can by either walking for 30 min. during lunch or using my exercise machine at home in the bedroom. I am determined to lose the weight this coming year. I’m tired of back problems, acid reflux, knee problems, and even little things like the difficulty with tying my shoes. I want to have to get new clothes because I am too SMALL for them now rather than the problem I’ve been having.
Changing my work schedule should help with this as well.
I think that God is sending me more signals this past week. I was approached by a company to do some document scanning and digitizing. They want their office to be “paperless” and need electronic versions of their forms and the like. I also have been listening to the news about the Robert Blake trial. It seems that the lawyer’s apartment was burglarized and his computer was stolen. Well as the reporters started talking, I find out that the trial has taken so long due to the fact that there are literally tens of thousands of documents to be referenced and checked for the trial. All the docs needed to be scanned and put in a database to be “readily accessible” during the trial. Also, one of the main reasons that Blake fired his first attorney was because of cost. The original lawyer wanted to use a document scanning company that he’d done business with in the past but was a fairly costly company to use and Blake managed to find an alternative company on his own to do the scanning and indexing. Hmm… All this happened this past week! Candi and I sat down with the document that this company wanted scanned and digitized and estimated that it may cost them $14,000 for the work if we do it! I don’t know what they’ll say or decide but if we get the contract it could be a good place to start from. I already have a document feeder for my scanner and the required software to do the OCR operations.
So it’s looking like I may be creating a company that simply offers a “hodge podge” of services, as a friend recently described. If I haven’t done it in the past, I’m sure I can figure it out! I’m not interested in working on their computers or networks, but just about any other technical operations that need doing I can probably do.
So here’s a list of services that we’re thinking of doing so far:
=====================
-AutoCAD drafting
-AutoCAD training
-Computer training (office productivity improvements)
-Mass document scanning and digitizing
-Office data backup solutions
-Notary Public
-Real Estate appraisal
-Custom map making
-3D animations for engineering concepts
-Website creation and management
-Digital photography and editing
Possible additions to look into in the future:
=====================
-Computerized bookkeeping/accounting support
-Virtual Private Networking setup
Well let’s see here…
I’ve got 3 computers to rebuild starting this evening and panning out to tomorrow morning. I have a DMV appointment in the morning around 8-9am. I have a retirement planning meeting at 10. Then I get to start some side work for a landscape architect doing some drafting at noon. That should take about 4 hours. Once that’s all done, I get to run up to Tehachapi to see my Mom. I’ll be working on her computer there too. My guess is that I’ll get home around 10pm and still have to be up early for church on Sunday. Dishes still need to be done, I’m behind on my plans to continue sorting out paperwork in the bedroom, and did I mention that I’m getting tired? Well we’re also low on money so I guess this is what we’re going to have to do. Hope I can find some good music to keep me going this weekend!
It dipped below 20 degrees last night! That’s cold for Southern California. My pipes froze in the master bedroom and had to take a shower in the guest bathroom this morning. A friend turned me on to this hilarious website http://www.lostfrog.org. I think I’m going to try and make a new image for their collection!
I’m excited about tonight. I get to meet with a retirement planner from State Farm and am hoping to better be able to plan out my financial goals for the next 30 years.
Last night was pretty awesome. My wife made me my favorite Guatemalan dinner and we had a ton of friends over to celebrate my birthday. It’s kinda’ funny, we had more women over than men (mostly all married of course). It was never like this for me when I was single! Lots of kids too. Thanks to all that came and all that have emailed and called me wishing me a happy 34th. I surely needed it.
Just got Gwen Stefani’s new album “Love Angel Music Baby”
My sister-in-law requested it and I’m pleasantly surprised at how much I like it. It’s pop-like beats sure do make the day go by fast when I’ve got a lot of work to jam out. Thanks Zully!
